Well, this site has gone dead I think. I really enjoyed all the posts and the all important updates. Learned a lot too. I am disappointed that the great river runs never happened. Those rivers north of Duluth are where I wet my waders as a kid 50 years ago. Dip nets so heavy I could hardly lift them. Rivers rising with the inflow of so many smelt that the water couldn't get to the lake. Filled up wash tubs and garbage can days. Two days just to clean them all and the smelt frys and smoked smelt feeds that followed. Staying up all nite and going to school in the morning. Hope to be back next year, and I hope ya'll come back too. greg

How about the Boy Scout trailer and tent at the lester where you could buy a basket of fried shrimp, the beer tent too but I was too young then to drink.
I found this site first part of April and man if I would have found something like this website earilier instead of listening to the DNR reports on when the run was, man!!. Just think of how many good years I missed in the past.
Great site, lots of info, people willing to tell you their secrets.
I made my first Frabil seine into a pocket seine this year because of this site. Caught 10 gals one night couple weeks back. Wish I could have gone more. Just reading how well people were doing on the point was almost like being there.
I am 65 and pulling seine too much for me with my heart but sat on beach and directed the guys I went with. We had a blast. I have already ordered another seine from Cabila's for next year with plans to make a shorter length net with maybe a trap pocket so they can't get back out once they are in. Small enough that my older buddy and I can pull a few trips.
It is not so much how many you get, it the people you meet on the way.
Don't even know who to thank on this site but "Thanks to All who put up threads" Gets you excited before you even pack the car.
I will still be watching reports for this year, sure it is not over completely but already looking towards next year. Never fished Park Point until this site got me interested.
WELL DONE!!

I changed plans, gonna grill a couple t-bones in a few minutes. Have a high school classmate that wants to give things a go in spite of the lack of reports. Wave cam indicates the point will be a no go but I'll check it out anyway, we'll moved to the Lester if needed. I plan to check out the breakwall between 9:30-10 tonight.

Want to throw a quick thank you to mailman, who upon request, at the last minute, cleared his schedule to come out and show me and my brother "the ropes". On a whim we decided to to try our hand at smelting after about twenty some years. Although, we had no luck it was great to catch up after many years, and pick his brain for new information as well. So once again, thanks mailman, and happy be lated birthday to you as well....

I was at the breakwall on sat. night. Smelt was running but slow. Waves were coming in pretty good. Everyone got about 8 to 10 gallons, but they had to work for it. Checked the lester river later that night and didn't see anything.

Thanks for the report Kongie. I'm sure the smelt will run on the point for a little while yet. On and off for maybe another week. The reports have dried up as of late. My specualation on that is that everyone has been able to use this site to help get all the smelt they need or want. And the weather hasn't been the greatest either. Not too many people have been left out this year due to a lack of current information.
Hats off to everyone that has been posting!
Keep the reports coming people, someone still might be trying to get there share yet!

Welcome aboard Westender. Thanks for the post!
There are roughly 125-150 smelt per gallon depending on size. So 500 smelt is about 4 gallons or almost a 5 gallon pail full. He did say another pail full tonight....just guessing. (Can't imagine 500 gallons by myself).
We did have another post from earlier in the year when someone who did well up there on their own. He had the entire river to himself and got plenty, even though someone told him it was way too cold yet.

that was me at the Temperance the last two Thursday nights, last Thurs. got a gallon between 9:30 and 11. Sometimes, when the waves were right, smelt would wash up on the beach, a new one for me! I will be at my cabin in Schroeder this Thurs. and may try again.
