Mailman, I talked to them the other night. They are from the Ukraine. They were the same group next to us as well. Interesting way of pulling for them, but it did distribute the work and make it easier. I'm not sure where they got their net from, but it did have a pocket and that's the key. What kind of net were you guys pulling?

"It's too cold." Mr. Northshore Steelheader said when I told him I was going to dip at the Temperance. Obviously not as I got 1.5 gallons in 2 hrs. Not quite as good as last year but, like last year, I got all I wanted in one night on the breakwall and I just needed a break from doing spring chores at the cabin. Again, had it all to myself, priceless. Now I'm going to play armchair wildlife biologist: I believe the smelt produce sperm/eggs when the water temps where they live (deeper water, right?) hit a certain point and when they are ready to deposit, they just do it, regardless of temps at the mouths of rivers or near shore. Just sayin'...

yeah dominodave, one of the nets had a pocket, they had one without a pocket, they seemed to have similar results. I have a cheap 25' seine but I'm gonna have the wife sow a pocket into it before I head out saturday night or sunday night so it will then be more like a 17' seine.

Shredder, I agree with you about temps. They don't need to be as warm as they think I'm sure of that. But I don't think that it's so late in the spawning process that the females are going to come in and just dump their eggs because they just have to come out. I actually think that the water temps are now in the sweet spot, the point is going well, and people have been getting em in the rivers on and off for more than a week now. Low river water levels could be a culprit as well. How were the water levels on the Temperance?

Water level at the Temperance was normal if not a tad high.

I just had Schmelty stop by for a visit. I had to share some bounty with him from the other night. It's always good to meet the people who enjoy sharing here on the forum. As it turned out, we have some mutual friends right here in town.
Things sound like they are still going fine...and the weather looks good for another night of fun! I have to work tonight...so no dipping or pulling for me.....so keep me posted. Otherwise, it's Friday...so it's time to make the pizza!

I managed to get about 15 gallons of smelt last night. I had to work for them as the waves came in. The forecast was off but hey I was there so I made the best use of it. Started to get more and more around 11:30 and died off about 1am. Some smelters gave up too soon and left the area while my group pounded the waves and them smelts. While pulling, I notice there was a guy and a cameraman interviewing my cousin on the shore. Turns out they were doing a documentary on smelting and our group happen to be their focus. We did some decent pulls while being filmed. I was getting exhausted after every pull as the waves were getting stronger and stronger. My brother in law had to help me finish the final pull towards the shore. Eventually water filled my wader to knee high and we called it a night at 1:30 as we were getting less and less smelts. All in all it was a great time.

Ceopheng, congratulations, you finally were in the right place at the right time. Where on the Point were you? And what time did you start?

I got to the tot lot around 9:30ish. I was maybe 20-30 yds to the left when you walk off the walk way. The other times that I was up at the point I was at the rotating light by the harbor airport. Others were getting fish but the waves were too strong that night. Last night was manageable..

I know the Point has been the hot spot this year, but has anybody heard anything about the Lester? It's been a while since anybody posted anything happening there this year.

Lester had some good action sat night. I probably netted 30 between 130- 3 am. Lots of people there. Don't know what it was like earlier.

Just got back from Phoenix. Everyone thinks were all nuts doing this thing called smelting. Anyone need help pulling on the point tonight. I only managed about a half gallon before I left. Ready to try again.
