Northwoods- thank you the updates on Lester. I might get up there tonight if people are starting to get some from there. I like park point and got a couple of gallons grom there but there were also lots of sands with the fish. Lester and other locations where people used dips nets tend to get cleaner smelts.

3 of us on the forum are hitting the tot lot at park point tonight. I'm already here and the waves are beautifully light. Got one seine, another guy or 2 would not be turned away. Setting up about 30 yards to the left of the walkway. Holler for the mailman if you decide to show up.

Mailman, could you "deliver" us an update from last night?
Hank, anymore details on things at the Lester would be great!

Me mailman and a couple others started at the tot lot and it was pretty slow so we move to the break wall and everyone had buckets and coolers full. We were there from 1030ish to 1 and manage to get maybe 3 gallons. Our net was a lot smaller than most. As we were packing up they really started running. A group had a pull that filled 2 five gallon buckets! And others were getting over a gallon a pull when we left at one. It's my first year smelting and that was the most smelt I have ever seen caught!

Would it be safe to assume that you are now officially hooked and have the fever bad?

Yeah the breakewall seems like the place to be. We realized they were moving slower than is so we slowed down and did better. Some of the seiners with 6' High nets seemed to do real well... More cupping across the center vertically?
Our net at ~18' is shorter than legal length. There were more than a couple nets that had to be close to to 40'. I think I'll stay legal, to much down side if you get tagged.
And yeah we did see some full coolers.

Mailman, I do not know what you mean by "deliver". Anyhow, he said it was the most ever caught. About 5 5gal buckets full.

the break wall was more than unbelievable! we left at 1am with two coolers full. everyone that i talked to had to leave cuz they were out of buckets or coolers to put smelt in! helped a group pull up 5 buckets worth in one pull! got about 20 a pull from 830 to 10 and then they just turned on! i think from 10 to 1am our smallest pull was about a gallon! i remember tonight for years. saw a lot of fires by the tot lot and by the air port, hopefully it was just as good there! it was a blast! get out there!!!

I just had Schmelty stop by for a visit. I had to share some bounty with him from the other night. It's always good to meet the people who enjoy sharing here on the forum. As it turned out, we have some mutual friends right here in town. Things sound like they are still going fine...and the weather looks good for another night of fun! I have to work tonight...so no dipping or pulling for me.....so keep me posted. Otherwise, it's Friday...so it's time to make the pizza! Tip of the hat to Domino..Pulled me out of smelt withdraws...Hoping to get my feet wet so to speak with the seining process as I've only been a "Dipper" to date...Thanks to all for the great updates this year!

Yes Hank I am a mailman, I deliver mail in Hoyt Lakes MN. I have to be down in Duluth for a meeting from 6-7 wednesday so I'll hit the breakwall wednesday night.
Working in Silver Bay Saturday so I gonna try beaver river Saturday evening with a dip net. I've got an extra dip net if anyone up beaver bay way just needs a dip net to give it a go.
