Kongie, Under the lift bridge is the Duluth Entry, the entry has 2 sea walls (break walls), there is a warm water flow from the St Louis River that goes out through the entry. This creates a huge draw for the smelt, and can create a nice area to seine for smelt on the sandy beach. I hope this helps.

Yes, we had to stop because we ran out of coolers, had to filled a med size otter sled that is normally used for ice fishing. I normally bring 3 coolers but last night I brought only one. Just my luck! Today is suppose to be another great day weather wise. Hopefully the smelts are running til the weekend for you guys that can't make it during the week. As always good luk and good smelting!!!

dominodaves, Thanks for the info. This will be my first year smelting in about ten years. I use to smelt in Door county, WI as a kid and loved it. Now that I moved to MN, never had the chance to do it again.

Welcome aboard. Remember, in MN you need a MN fishing license for smelting!

Just leaving the Point. 3 guys, 15 gallons, newby endoctrinated!!!! Tired but happy! Things were ok in the beginning and just got better. The biggest pull seen was 3 gallons, but 20 to a half gallon was average. Still running just fine. Started at dusk, left at 1230, next to breakwall...great night!

Last night was good for a few reasons. My son was down there with some friends from college, they brought waders and gave a hand too...it's always good to see your son after they go off to college. I got to see how a swedish oven works on the beach, it was cool!!!!!!!!! And them there guys know how to fry up some fresh smelt right there on the beach, and were nice enough to share as well...smelters, can't beat 'em... The smelt were running just fine last night...and the guys next to us were complaining how slow it was? ?? That's because they got 100 gallons the night before....and they they were back for more? They gotta have an army at home or something! Dwalker came down, brought a buddy, and also enjoyed the fire, and his frabil was doing fine when we were leaving, thanks dude. Lastly, I put a rope on the poles for my siene, to make pulling easier. Works like this...the rope is tied to the bottom of the pole and loops behind your back and back to the top of the pole and gets tied off...when you start pulling just put that loop around your back and use your back to do the pulling instead of your arms, works like a charm and saves the hands and arms and shoulders!! All you have to do is rest your arms on top of the pole to keep it down on the bottom. Don't get me wrong, it's still work, but the legs are doing more, and the upper body less. I'm now done for the year everyone, but will still be hanging out here on the forum and will help out where I can. It's been the best year that I can remember for a lot of years. 2012 will be remembered for a long time!

it was tough going last night, heavy surf and the smelt really didn't start showing up til about 11. 3 of us took almost 7 gallons by the breakwall before calling it a night. I did see 2 guys with a couple over flowing 5 gallon buckets. I misspoke that last post, I'll try dip netting at split rock river saturday night. Not sure about Sunday yet. I have monday off so maybe...
