I heard the same thing. Usually, it takes about a week from the first wave at Ashland to reach the north shore/Duluth

I just got report of eight gallons of smelt (night fall til 3am) last night. Some pulls were between 20-30 but there were some pulls of 1-3 too. So far, this might be the start that we are all looking for. If I remember correctly, they were the only ones at park point. Not a bad start for the first wave of smelt here at MN's shore. I am going to try this Thursday or Friday because the weather and winds seem to be more promising on those days. Keep us posted for those of you giving it a shot before I do. If anything I'll keep everyone posted.

Hey Dave!! I'm here brother!! Waiting for the Wx to crank up the heat a bit to get things rolling!
Everything is behind this year...even the Morels!! Last year, I was already harvesting dozens of them!
And you can bet my 'crew' will have a roaring fire and plenty of 'Anti-freeze' to share! ;D

Good to have you aboard again Woodtick!
Well, I just had to check out the Lester last night. The water was warmish, very low, and no smelt, nobody else there, nothing happening yet, I figure there hasn't been enough warm water being put out to warm the lake enough to draw them in yet. It's getting pretty late in the year for there to be no action at all.
So we went out to the Point to check out how things were going there, no one around, so nothing to report. With the coolish weather continuing, I would expect things to continue to be delayed for a bit yet, when the season plays out like this, the run tends to be hard and fast when it happens, so be ready, a couple of nice warm days up there and things will change fast.

Hello everyone. I'm interested in smelting this year and I have done it once about 5 years ago with some friends that introduced me to the sport back then. I believe we were dip netting at the north shore and I'm trying to figure out when I should head out because I am down in the twin cities out in Farmington. Thanks for having this forum up and running because I too will be keeping a close eye as to when I should take the drive up. I got my dip net ready...

So far not much action. This weekend should warm up a bit, and maybe that will be the trigger to the smelt run... Keep up the report guys! Thanks!

LOL!! Dave...you actually went up last night?? You are a Smelting Nut!! ;D
Yes, very true that the lack of sunshine and cooler temps will certainly hinder the warming up of the pond. But the later it holds off, the warmer the air temps will be when they do run!! I love Smelting in 45F Wx!
Looking at the Wx for the next week to 10 days...I am thinking its gonna be closer to the 29th to the 2nd for the rivers to heat up! And true...it does tend to be a flash in the pan when its this late.
Here's to another fun year of catching those tasty critters! See ya up there soon Dave!

Yep I did! The daytime temp of the river waters have been in the low 40's. That's usually warm enough to start a trickle of action to get things started, but not yet.

I agree. If it's a late run then the smelt will come fast and furious and be done within a short time frame. I hope I Won't miss it.

Should be fun. Ashland's smelt run is at full force. Wish I could make it but it's just way too far for me. Good luck! I'll be waiting until the smelts start running towards the mn shores

Park point has seen limited action. Some guys down from us reported 3-4 coolers of smelt. We only had one. average pulls were from 5-8 smelt each seine. This was Last night - Thursday night.
