Okay, here's the deal. Yep, that ice is the problem. However, it's a blessing as well. the longer it takes to leave, the better and stronger and more predictable the run will be!
Now it does look pretty bad....but a good SW breeze could blow it all away. Or a strong NE wind could push it all ashore. In either case, after it leaves...only a couple days of sun and it will be game on! At this point, the smelt are ready....and so are we! But we need some fishable water now.
Here's the general order:
1. Ashland 2. Park Point and WI Point 3. The North Shore Rivers
That last snow storm pushed everything back about 7-10 days. My guess is we will be eating fresh smelt by the 27th! Peaking early May!

With the warming weather coming up, I’m thinking more of next weekend (finger cross), just need the ice to move away from the beach and we are good. I know last year there were patches of snow around the beach but it was on! And it didn’t last long too, very short time...

Anyone keeping an eye on the Lester? This year seems a bit similar to last year now. They started in the Lester before the ice was all off the beach. Maybe not quite as much ice this year though?

Here's an update people. I spoke with a longtime reliable friend who is a hardcore smelter that lives in Duluth. He's won't be dipping or seining this year since he just got a new hip. So his little wifey will have to catch all them smelt for him to clean! He does not mind! LOL
So here's the poop! And for some a big pile of it! One of our all time favorite spots, the airport on PP, has more ice on it than he has ever seen in 55 years! That last monster storm blew in the biggest piles of ice he's ever seen. The lake had a huge ice pack this year, and just as it was all breaking up, this storm through it all in on Duluth. He was guessing that they be out of the water as high as 50 feet. So imagine how far down it goes as well. Likely, all the way to the bottom. So his opinion is that no wind will blow it out or coming in will break it up. It may just have to melt right there....
So, it looks like WI point and most if not all of PP will be locked up for quite a while. I have no idea when this will melt or move a away. But, the water flowing out of the canal may create some seinable water near the canal. But we are taking about a small area of opportunity when that eventually happens.
So the rivers will likely crank up earlier than the beach this year, similar to last year, and maybe in a big way. Imagine if all the smelt that usually use the 7 miles of beach all had to use the rivers this year! OH MY!!!!
My buddy is taking temps and we will be talking daily....
But anyone who is a hardcore seiner better be ready to adjust to the rivers this year! Who knows, maybe the ice will melt faster...or the rivers could be just flat out crazy!!!
Every year is always different!! I just love it!!!!

Some guy toldmy buddy that they were run at the lester think he trying to pull peoples legs. I dont think the river is warm yet for that and wish we had people that would tell us the truth instead of some people wasteing there time driving up when people cant tell the truth. So would be nice if some one up there would say if there really running. And i know it wont be tell may first weekend or so tell they should be running. So plz tell the truth for the people that want to go up and injoy fishing with there kids and meet new people.

I was at Lester early last night for maybe 15 minutes. Saw a couple hard core waders on the west side and a few dippers on the east. Didn't see any shine. FWIW

Here's my best explanation.... lakesuperiorfishing.net/ is them main site that hosts this forum. For me, it seems that it has a different profile for a phone app verses a laptop or PC computer with a land line connection. So there seems to be 2 different applications. So when you are land line connected, you can access the proper profile that gives you options for weather and webcams. This also has other links to satellite photos of lake superior that are updated multiple times daily. So if the sun is shining you can see exactly where the ice is sitting. Then there are also links to various webcams that the public can access and see what is happening in real time. Unfortunately, the beach cam has not been working at all on the links or it's actual website origin. But the canal cam or harbor cam shows some solid images of conditions as well. There are also links to current weather conditions such as air temps and wind directions and speeds..... For some reason, I can't get this info on my phone....which would be great when I'm on the beach or in a river. I hope this helps. Have you tried requesting the desktop site with your browser? Works for me, Android, Chrome.

I'm thinking the smelt got to be running somewhere, cause I already see people posting for sale ads on Facebook. Unless they just taking orders before the run.
