A month ago we were all chomping at the bit. Then a big cool down happened. But now, it's looking like a decent warming trend with some wetness will make us start chomping again!!!
It shouldn't be long now folks!!!

Just heard they are starting to trickle in at Wisconsin point. Only 5 in a pail but they’re creeping in. I will check tonight and update. Happy smelting all warm weather all week.

I was out at Wisconsin Point last night. Between one other guy and myself we netted a grand total of 11 in four hours. Not yet running at the point.

depends on where and time, I know a friend who pulled a bucket out with one net. They are definitely coming in on the Wisconsin side. MN soon to follow.

Here's my input today. My birdies are starting to chirp! Some say it's time! Some say, not yet! Who should we listen too? It's a long drive for most of us, and it's hard work for all of us! And no one wants to waste time doing either!
This type of Spring, as I said before, Is and Will be maddening for all us smelters! One guy over here will do well, and over there people get nothing! One night is great the next sucks with seemingly no changes in weather. Early spring with warm winters create a start and stop type of smelt run. So be prepared for that this year! I'm actually happy we had that cool down when we did. This will help consolidate the run.
With the sun and warmth this weekend, I'd bet they will get going a bit better! As usual, the early days of the run will be good early and taper quickly with the water cooling on beach. As the water temps rise a bit more...they will run longer into the evening.
Please keep the reports coming in, good or bad. Thanks!
Happy smelting!

I also got a pic from a buddy of the Lester. It shows water flowing! Out through a break in the gravel bar. Now the smelt can get in there!

Hit the point Saturday night and the wind was brutal. Three nets were being used and left around 1:30am with about 300 smelt 95% males.

Good Morning Smelters!!!
Today is a great day. I get to tell you about last night. I have a good buddy that made it out last night. He started at the airport. It was slow, but they did get some. Maybe 6-12 per net. So he headed to the Lester to check things out. They got some there too! Once again, not a lot. Maybe 1-2 every 3rd scoop or so. This is the beginning of the run!!! So you can start making plans!!!!
I figure we got 3 weeks of decent getting some. Maybe a "peak" in a week to 10 days. This is all weather dependent of course. The big rains coming tomorrow and Wed could blow out the rivers and help the beach. But cooler weather afterwards could slow things down too.
I plan on going up tonight before the big rains. I'll keep you posted live from my spots!

Quick dip and go at Wisconsin Point Monday night. 30 minutes with 35 smelt. I believe we are in the early stages of this years run. Good luck all.

Going to Ashland Bayview Park tonight, is it worth it right now? Or should we stick to Duluth?
