Hi Dave. Nice to see you again. You are right. Everything look good so far. Hopefully there won’t be any big late snow storm like last year and smelts will be run on average time.

Going to make my way out to Wisconsin Point to see if anyone is drop net smelt fishing off the pier tonight. I don't want to miss it this year.

Summer like temps sure did a number on the snow pack here in the Mpls area in recent days. And Duluth has seen some sweet temps as well. My buddy sent me a few pics of the Lester. It's running high and hard right now with plenty of ice chunks in it.
The recent gale they had on the lake deposited plenty of ice on the beaches of park point too.
So we have a little time yet, but all signs are encouraging! It won't be long now!

A look a the beach cam this morning shows 8 people out surfing!!!! Crazy people!! A more sane individual would do that in the dark with a seine!!!! LOL!!!
The nice sized waves have broken up all the ice near the shore, and the only remaining ice is now just sitting on shore and melting in the sun!!!
So if we don't have any more packs of ice show up and get blown in on shore, we should be able to start sampling any day now!
I believe we should see some of those tasty little bastards in our frying pans within a week or so if these conditions continue!!

Hey yall new to the forum but have been around here checking it out from year to year to see when the run is going,
Does anybody go down to Ashland to smelt? and my question is, does the run start earlier than in Duluth? Does the water get warm enough for the run to start there first?
just wanted to see if its worth going to Ashland first then Duluth right after
thanks

Well folks, I wish I had better news. But I'm sure you don't live under a rock! And have seen the weather we are having!
My buddy says the Lester temp is 35 degrees and still has ice chunks in it. And it's running very high and fast! So that's way out this weekend.
The beach cam shows some horrific waves coming in. The good news is that they have beat the remaining ice piles to death! But I'm sure that we need some, any, warmer weather, sun...and time to trigger the smelt to move in!
Zero reports from Ashland so far. And yes, they usually go 1st before the beach in Duluth and the rivers up the North Shore!
