Just curious...... from what I am gathering you transport smelt in 5 gallon buckets back to your truck. Then put them in coolers for the trip home.
1) Do you mix ice in with them for the trip home? My trip home is about 3 hours.
2) How long do you have to get them cleaned?
Any other handling suggestions?
Thanks!!

You have the right information ! AND ~ I have found that to freeze them, **DO NOT** clean them. Put in freezer bags filled with water or better yet, if you have 1/2 Gallon Milk containers, stuff them in there and fill with water and put in freezer ! Works REALLY GREAT and then ya don`t have to clean for hours ! They taste LAKE FRESH after thawing, then clean them. M M M `` good luck to everyone and stay safe `` No DRINKING & DRIVING ~ PLEASE !

you should freeze them completely covered in water. with most fish you want to clean them first. this prevents stomach acids from digesting fish from inside out while stored...in my opinion

That is just a few more bulky items you will need to transport on your trip. I transport them home in the five gallon buckets. Leave some space at the top of your buckets for around four inches of ice and they should travel home just fine. Helpful tip: Load them to the front of your truck so they do not spill if you do some heavy braking or quick turns, if using a cooler not a big concern. Top the buckets off with ice when you get home and add a little water and they will stay good and cold. The colder you keep them during the cleaning process the better they will taste in my opinion. I usually clean an ice cream bucket at a time and get them packed up however you like while the rest of the Smelt sit on ice.
