Hello, just a noobie question but I was just curious if a net with a pocket/sock is necessary to net these smelt? Do these net with a pocket have a higher chance of getting more smelt or a can I just get a cabela's/frabil net? Any feedback would be appreciated, first time this year and trying to celebrate my birthday up north and spend a few days! I was hoping to stay on budget and get a cabela's seine, but reading all over the internet everyone seem's to point out that a "pocket/sock" is needed.

1st off...Welcome aboard Fresh! Boy, we get your question a lot about nets. In the early days they didn't make their nets with a pocket, so no you don't have to have one. These pockets are mainly for holding fish in the net when pulling the net out of water with any kind of waves that may knock fish out at that crucial moment at shore. But with good technique and timing you can get away without having a pocket. The next thing about cheaper nets is that they tend to not have enough weight on the bottom of the nets to keep them in contact with the bottom when pulling. This makes them not as efficient, so if you go cheap, you will likely need to add more weights to the bottom of your net. Last years thread has a lot of info on that subject, so read up. The last thing I will say is that the good nets are worth every penny! Hear me now, and believe me later! There is nothing worse than getting your hopes high, timing things right, being in the water when they are running good, and watching others pull big piles out of their nets, while your cheap net is getting only a few or none at all!!!! Been there, done that, will never be there again!!!! Good luck this year, and keep us posted on what you decided and how things went.
Aceyang..,Welcome aboard too!!! And why did you have to go and use a profile pic like that? It makes my pic look puny and scrawny! Now I want to beef mine up a bit!
Jeep..nice to have you too!
Iluvmn...glad your back!

2freah don't get a cabelas or frabil net unless you want to catch a few minnows. H Christiansen nets in duluth or douglasnet.com check them out

In a word....neoprene! The great thing about waders is that they are good for a lot things other than just smelting. But even the good ones are pretty affordable now. The neoprene is the insulation and waterproof material in one. Head to Gander or Cabela's and choose pretty much anything as long as they are neoprene. I would also advise getting a pair that has the boot attached. They sometimes sell them with socks that you have to put shoes or boots on. These are not good in my opinion. I also haven't heard how the nets from douglasnet are or how long they take to get. Keep us posted.

It's nice to see a lot of new users - Welcome! It's always exciting when this time of the year rolls around.
The only thing I hope for is a condensed, consistent run. Last year was all over the place and mostly hit or miss. What happened to the good old days when the run would last 3-5+ days??
Please keep the stories, questions and news coming guys! Good luck!!!

I hear we're getting temps in the 70's for this week. If this keeps up we might be looking at another two weeks for them to run? I'm still hoping they run at the end of April or early May though since I'm tied up with school until after April. Lol.

Wow, I thought last years run was really good!!! It was pretty compressed compared to previous years. I will say this though, you are correct that things did shut down for a few days. But that has more to do with the weather, more specifically a strong NE wind bringing in cooler water off the main lake than not enough smelt! And we can predict those outcomes knowing that that weather is coming. We will always be at the mercy of the bad conditions, there is no way around it, so all we can do is understand that is part of the game! We did have some badly timed weather issues last year that fell on the weekends. But I think pretty much everyone got all they wanted last year. But one thing is for sure, imagine trying to get your fill of smelt without this forum! It would be like going back to the dark ages of the 80's, 90's, and early 00's!

I agree with you dominodaves. I believe it was you and captainkirk last year that helped a bunch with the early reports that led onto a decently successful season. I would also like to say again that if anyone is in need of a seine net, Brunson Net and Supply Inc. in AL did a great job on the net I received. There was a confusion about putting a bag/sock into the seine net so they're making me a new one without the extra charge and shipping it out tomorrow after sending me one without the bag/sock. I believe with the added bag/sock, the total comes out to roughly $160 according to the guy who I spoke to. I'll update again when the new net arrives. Below is their website and you can call to talk to Steve. Asked him how long it would take to finish and ship the net and he said it takes about a week to make the net and then shipping time so another 3-4 days. www.brunsonnet.com/
