The real question is, Who really stops thinking about the smelt season? I'm with Vee, I started thinking about how this year is going to go when last season ended. But I do about all the other seasons that I hunt and fish as well, so just call me obsessed I guess. Nice to see others ready to roll too, Welcome Back! I'm thinking about trying a few new spots this year. I've always wondered how they would produce. So I think I will give them a go this time as long as the season is bountiful!
I'm hoping that Spring shows up earlier than last year!!!

I sure hope spring arrives early as well. I don't mind trying new places either but we'll see how this year plays out.

Just had my first smelting dream of the season last night. We didn't even need a seine on the Point they were so thick! Only dip nets. Come on spring!

I remember filling a cooler by hand when I was a kid. But the water was cold. Sucker if I remember right, off limits now because of private property and dangerous terrain. They came in so hard they were pushing themselves out of the water on to shore. 1974 ish.
I was reading a report that the great lakes has set a new record for the most ice ever. Something over 90% for all the lakes. WOW. So I'm guessing an early spring is unlikely. But if the temps can be 30 degrees below normal...I guess they could be 30 degrees above normal too....who knows.
This cold is wearing on me though! I saw 24 below last night here in North Branch. UUGG!!!

Hey fellas! I was just going through last year's post again about smelting to see when they ran and it was the very last day of April. Decided to log in and I noticed a thread was already started for this year. It's good to see that I'm not the only one pumped already. Haha. I was really hoping for a similar time frame like last year's, but with this winter being much colder than the rest within the past 30 years...I think we'll be expecting a later run unless the weather somehow warms up more than we all expect it to be. I guess there will be more time for ice fishing. Haha

I have my new Christiansen's net and it is white. Should I dye it a darker color or does it matter?

First off.....Welcome aboard!
Secondly, I would strongly advise getting a Christiansen net. They are not cheap, but I have never heard anyone complain about them or wish they had something better. Get your buddies to pitch in, because you can't pull them by yourself.
Interesting idea about making them darker. But my experience has never indicated that the color of the net makes a difference. Just how you pull them. We had a lot of advise on that subject in last years discussion. Read up, and keep us posted with more questions and ideas.
The warm weather has definitely heated up the forum traffic! Let it melt...so we can get some smelt!!!

I was thinking about your idea of darkening your net. I personally would not do it. Here's why. We pull these babies in the dark. So being able to tell if they are set properly is important and would be very tough if if they were dark in dark water. Also, the debris that the nets pull up is basically dark brown and black as well. So getting that stuff out would be much harder too. So being able to see things in the dark is very helpful. I'm sure this is why they make them in this whitish color. I hope these thoughts make sense.

Yes, order it online, or call them. Christiansen nets out of Duluth. They will ship. And you have plenty of time. Vee got one last year in only days. No worries. Good luck and let us know how long it took. I'm sure others will want to hear about you experience.
