Say that Lester is too deep to wade into to smelt, can you go more upstream to smelt or is it not allowed?

1st off, no worries, most of the Lester will be very smeltable. However, the flood carved out a couple of holes in spots that have been usually shallow. I'm sure a couple of folks will step off the edge in the wrong spot and go for a plunge. But it gets shallow again around the new gravel bar.
As far as upstream goes, I'm not sure. I do know that the hole that got carved by the bridge looked to go under the bridge and back up stream a bit. There used to be a small 1-2 foot waterfall-rapids about a 100 yards up from the bridge. I'm not sure if that is still there now or if there are any other holes carved out up in that area yet. But I'm sure it will be much different than it used to be. So if you show up in the dark, use caution.
And how things drop off again into the lakeside of the gravel bar will need to determined as well. it will have a completely different feel to it, that is for sure.

Hmm, sounds reasonable enough. I'll most likely come check it out during the day before testing it out at night though as a precaution. Last year when I came up, Lester already looked pretty deep to me so if it's even deeper now it can be quite scary.

Wow, it's really coming down here in North Branch! And I see that Duluth is going to get another 8-12+, oh well, more water for the rivers when it melts! Looks like smelting season will be in full swing along with opening fishing!

here in the twin cities we're getting some snow too, but i dont know the exact inches. it's going to be tough deciding in between walleye and smelt! lol. i was hoping that the smelt would be running by late april, but with this year's weather probably not until mid may?

Heard a report on the news this morning of 22 inches in Two Harbors. Just got done digging out 12 inches here in Cloquet.
On the positive side, according to the Duluth News Tribune, the 2nd annual Run Smelt Run parade will be taking place in Canal Park at 4:00 p.m. Sunday. Parade, music, smelt fry and smelt royalty. If anybody's looking for a smelt-related party and an early taste, there you go!

Can't wait for the smelt season to get under way. Hopefully this year will be better than last year. We just need mother nature to be nice and give us several weeks of warm weather.

I'm hoping for a good year as well, but we are setting records for a late spring this year. It's April 20th and there are reports of 30" of ice on Mille Lacs still with another 12" of fresh snow on it, WOW. I'm just don't know how this will all affect the smelt run. My bet though is it will be short and sweet, it may only last a few days but could be very intense. So if you can only come on weekends you might be out of luck, but who knows? Timing is everything, and maybe things will play out "normally", just much later though.
Our fire dept normally has a smelt fry on May 4th, no signs up for it yet....? I'm guessing they are worried as well.

I'm sorry, I forgot my manners, the forecast has my brain side tracked! cvang, thanks for your input and honesty. I don't do FB, so I can't see the pic's but now you understand what I was posting about earlier. You just can't beat wood and metal...speaking of...Lori dropped off that net she had...Looks like the old handle had broke, I suspect it was thin metal since the metal net was is in such great shape. So they took a closet doweling and a couple of hose clamps and made a real solid handle that's like 10' long! It should work real swell...thanks Lori!!!!!

Hey people, did you see the forecast? It looks like the worm has finally turned. Sunny weather, highs in the 60's, and most importantly, low's in the upper 30's and lower 40's!!!!! WooooHoooo!!!!! We actually might have to start monitoring things more closely next week....!!!!
We got 5" here in North Branch, most of it melted on contact on the roads, trees and grass should be melted in a couple days. I'm seeing a 73 in the forecast down here in the cities on Sunday! I'll believe it when I feel it.
