Yeah, looks like some ice blew into the beach. Here is a view just up the shore near Leif Erikson park in Duluth

For those looking for dip nets they have the metal nets with wooden handles at the L & M store in Grand Rapids, MN for about $24 each. They also have the metal poled ones for $30 each. Also if your in the twin cities you can try the Fleet Farm stores, I bought a couple of the cloth ones a couple of years ago there. Good luck to everyone this year, I'm hoping I can make it but work schedule is heavy so might be hit and miss again. I couldn't make it at all last year, my main netting partner was in Afghanistan and his sister just started college and their father was to tied up with both but sure hoping to get there a couple of times this year.

Park point is pretty socked in right now. Though, as you all know, ice comes and goes pretty quick on the big lake.

His beach pic is a perfect example of how mother nature is torturing us this year!!! And Duluth has picked up over 19 inches of snow as well this April....and it's only the 15th.....uugg!!
On the bright side though, some warmer weather is forecast for next week....and July as well!

With this kind of weather, we might never get to smelt until mid to late May.

My son stopped by the Lester today. Still pretty frozen, with little to no water flowing. And this pic will show you how the mouth has changed dramatically from last year. You can clearly see the gravel bar protecting the mouth of the river now. It could change more when with the spring melt and usual "flush" of water.... Attachments:

I have a metal net with a wooden handle, if anyone is looking for one. It was only used a couple of times. I would be willing to trade it for a ice cream pail of smelt over the next couple years.. Also if anyone is looking for a mask/planing boards for the big lake. I do have one with the big boards for sale. Let me know if you are interested.

Wow, to think thats how Lester looks like now. The mouth of it seem to have opened up alot bigger also.

Yep, it's a massive change. And the water is real deep on the north side now as well. Maybe 8-10 feet? I'm just guessing though. So it's going to be a bit dangerous. The flood just gouged everything out, and left it right in front of the mouth.
Lori, I'm interested in that net, I sent you a personal message, so check your inbox.

Was excited to see some of the ice starting to break up. Still about 100 yards of ice pushed up against the beach.
