New member here. Read this board for the last couple seasons, decided kids were big enough to make the trip. We were targeting doing the rivers. Staying in Two Harbors. Went to the Lester last night from 9:30pm to 12:30am, scouted it during the late afternoon. during the day there were dozens of shore birds 20-30 yards off shore. A local said the smelt were there and the birds were diving to get them. At night, maybe 100 people there, but people seemed to be getting on 1 at a time after a whole bunch of dips. One family of at least 3 had about 20 smelt at 12:30. The smelt were being pulled in right at the mouth of the river. Others were on the lake side pulling in one at a time at a similar rate. We got a few after one of the kids got right at the mouth. He got 1 every 15 minutes.
We scouted the Knife, and talked to a local who said that is all private, to his knowledge. So we will pass. He was fishing something else up at Baptism on Tuesday and said the water temp was 44 degrees. He hadn't fished smelt in many years, so he didn't have much on smelt. We are going to scout Stewart, Gooseberry, Split Rock, and maybe Beaver and Baptism today. The local said we would have good access at Split Rock. We mainly will be looking to see if one is more sheltered than another. With 20 mph winds, my little one (9 yr old) won't last long.
I wonder if the run is done in Duluth, and we need to move north? It seems it ran for a week already at Park Point, and maybe slightly less at Lester.
Any insight to last night, or the rivers above is appreciated. Tonight is our last night up here, I'll post what we did.

I'm not sure how to advise you on the rivers this year. We are getting so few posts on them it's hard to get a feel for the run. One of posters named shredder usually hits the temperance and does quite well. I know the smaller rivers will warm faster than the bigger rivers so keep that in mind as well. But I don't think any major runs have hit the rivers yet. I do know this, if they aren't producing, don't be afraid to run and gun a bit. Talk with the people that have been there and find out how the past days have gone. I know a guy named Tim with a heavy accent will give you a good report on the Lester if you can find him out there. If the rivers are still running pretty hard the smelt can't get in them so work the outside of the mouth near the current. If the current lets up at the Lester, it's going to be awesome in that harbor like area. The wind should be blowing offshore tonight and settling down, so hopefully your kids will be a little more comfy.
Otherwise good luck.
Shredder, you got any updates on the temperance? Lets help this guy out!

hey guys, went to the Temperance Thurs nite and dipped for a bit (was pooped) with no luck. Went back last nite and dipped from 9:30 til midnight...one smelt...the river was roaring, but no more than past years. The waves, however, were another story. It was brutal, and dangerous. I tried. Am probably done for the year, commitments next week will keep me from going. One thing is a charter next Saturday with Cap'n Peter's son Dave. Looking forward to that.
Oh yeah, some locals said they were going to try the Cross River for smelt on Friday, we swung by there around midnite and saw no one there, but again, big waves.
Good luck to all and be safe!

Was thinking of Ashland tomorrow night. I need to look at winds and figure out if I'm going or not. Will need to find someone to help pull my 50 footer if I make it.

Scouted all the rivers I mentioned all the way up to Baptism. Talked to two different DNR folks at Gooseberry and Baptism. They hadn't heard much about people smelting the rivers yet. The DNR at Baptism said that on Tuesday, the rivers temps were still in the high 30s. She said too that the smaller rivers could have warmed faster. We will start with Stewart. It was a smaller one, and had a small mouth we could cover more easily. Gooseberry had a small mouth that we could cover more too. The water was moving pretty fast there. Split Rock had easy access as well. It was super windy there though. Since maybe water temps maybe are just hitting right, we might stick to those more southern rivers.

At Stewart. Been in the water for about 45 minutes with two nets. We have 18. Slowed down a bit the last 15 minutes.
