Oops I take that back after reading the DRN report. They are probably good food for the trout!

It seems like every year or so someone asks or posts about Grindstone. Me and this lake have some history. I'll call it a frustrating history. Yes, this lake has smelt. Yes, this lake is small, very small. Thus making the smelt numbers much smaller as well. Almost entirely private access all the way around. Yes, you can dipnet at the access, however, it's not like the north shore at all. It's a stream that comes out of a culvert and is maybe 8 ft wide and at the mercy of recent rains, and when it does rain, it's muddy and no good! So if the right water conditions and timing of the run come together...you can catch a bucket or 2. But that seems to happen about every 5 years or so.....UGGG!
There is little parking at the access, and not very much room in the stream. And closer...is relative. By the time you get off the freeway and get there, Duluth isn't all that much further away.
So here's my take... The run there is really very small, short lived, unpredictable and frustrates peoples hopes of an earlier and easier smelt dinner. So not worth the effort in my opinion. But if you do want early, I hear that you can catch them through the ice in the winter! So, be patient, the run in Duluth will be here soon enough! We just need a little more warmth and any wind other than the NNE cold air that seems to persist this time of the year!

Just a trickle of smelt in Ashland, might be more thru the wknd but after that the night time temps are getting cold again. might be a stretched out run this year with the long range forecasts predicted. Also Bayview park is closed till May 1st. so not a whole lot of options on where to go.

Only one or two every 10 pulls with dropnets. down below Von holzen there is a cement wall to drop off of, its okay but could be better. otherwise down below americinn motel for a fee i believe, and below anglers all but not much room. anything west of the oredock will be a waste of time. for all the promoting they do, they fail to let folks know that there is only a few hundred yards of public seining area to be had. there is plenty of area on the west side of oredock but all them smelt disappeared many yrs ago for some unknown reason.

Are we talking about the parks west of bayfield park?? Public seining I presume?? That seems like the only place west I know and the hot pond Since we only use bayfield park I don’t know where people are seining them

Smelt Master The weather looks like it is going to stay cool. How warm does it have to get before they run? Thanks ahead of time.

Smelt Master The weather looks like it is going to stay cool. How warm does it have to get before they run? Thanks ahead of time. We've hit smelt along (under) the ice packs to open water at 38-39° and up to mid 40's. Before the naysayers chime in with the myth "smelt don't run under the ice" a well respected member here can support this having seen it first hand a few years ago on a very exclusive and rare opportunity to smelt with a fellow net master. The grand net master was not present however on this particular night but has himself witness this on many occasions in the past 25 plus years. Cool weather often prolongs the run once it starts. High winds can push warmer surface water and replace it with cooler water which can often result in no smelt. The opposite is also true wind can push in warmer surface water as well triggering a run (it can also push warmer water under the ice). Personally prefer cooler smelting weather. A big warm up would likely trigger a big run but would often result in a short and sweet run. Oh, and Grindstone. Domino nailed it and I may add the runs there in recent years have been very lackluster. If you would allocate say two or three nights for smelting per season I would highly recommend watching the wind and daily reports and focus your attention on park point, WI point and the streams up to 60 miles North of Duluth. Tight lines and full nets. Smelt Master 4.0
