I'm gonna be trying April 28th weekend, that's my best guess for when they'll hopefully be running this year. I think you're right on the money.

Hello guys, Looks like it will be a late run this year. The river and bay are still iced up. I will be going to take water temps later this week to get an idea of what's happening. Really get the itch and getting all the nets ready.

Speaking of getting the nets ready , ....what might be a good way to attach my 25 ft net to a couple handles or poles ? I have a couple 1 inch dia. Conduits about 5 feet in length, thinking about using eyelet bolts on them spaced about 3 1/2 ft apart ( 4 ft high net)....and then some snap swivels from the net to the eyelets on the poles. Maybe I should try some wooden handles of some sort? Anyway,...any advice will be seriously appreciated.

I would go with pvc pipe with a cap on both ends. Then I just drill holes through the pipe one down by the bottom cap and the other about 4 foot above that. And if you put 2 more about an inch inside those 2 on the opposite side you can add a rope to help you pull the net

Also drill some holes to let water in and out

Agreed, PVC seems to hold up the longest and performs the best. Water never seems to degrade it or weaken it.

Many folks are asking when the run will begin. Or what weekend to plan on?
I will say this, 2013 seems to be the last year that we had such late spring conditions persist! My guess is that we will be catching smelt into the Memorial Weekend this year! Yep!!!! I said that!!!! We did then, and that is likely the scenario again this year! We should have a very late start to the run....but that is great imo! We will have a very "intense" run that will result in huge numbers of smelt being caught on a "shortened" run! This is the kind of year that people think that since they didn't run on "April 20th" or so that they didn't spawn or dumped their eggs in open water! Which is hogwash! I've explained in previous posts why. The run will be a lot later than normal this year for the obvious reasons...water cannot warm until it melts from the snow banks and ice that it is stuck in! Plan on deciding on weather to fish the opener or go smelting this year!!!! I'm almost certain that will be the case....again!!!

I also heard that leech Lake still has 26" of ice on it! Open water season seems so far away right now....kind of depressing!!!
