Sorry Grace, But your simple question brought up a larger question.... Thanks for you patients as we debate this a little.. I can drop you a note on your other questions maybe later this week. This is going to go a little deep into the world of “what the heck is the DNR telling us” Yep on page 65 it does talk about a 24” max dip net but this is in reference to catching rough fish. “You can only use spears, underwater harthingys, dip nets, seines used for taking smelt, traps used for taking minnows for bait or angling equipment and nets associated with angling.” Then it goes on to describe the dip nets that can be used for rough fish... “The hoops on hand-held dip nets cannot exceed 24 inches in diameter.”
PS anyone wondering if the DNR is some how classifying smelt as a rough fish... Nope they don’t, Here is an example of them listing is separately from rough fish. www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/?id=97C.835&format=pdf This bugged me enough to the point that I called the dnr on this a few times and they could not point me to the actual regulation on the smelt dip nets either. So then I spent a few hours combing through the state laws on this and I could not find anything that regulated the size of dip nets for smelting, I could only find the one for rough fish that jg010682 was referring to. Not at all trying to argue about this and would love to know if anyone has found anything different! For sure not wanting to break the law on this, so if anyone finds anything on this please post it! Thanks!! The bigger question is if an a frame net would even work well in these parts ... It could be ..? If we find out I missed something on this and it is in-fact not legal, then I will just stick with our Christiansen net and then move move my research on this to the ocean

I did a little searchin and this is what i found by the sounds of this you might be able to have a 4 foot wide dip net not positive though would like to here what a dnr officer has to say about it

Hey jg010682; I've read back a few years on the forum and the guys talk about smelting at the "park" just east of the bridge; and also out at the airport. Does dougger222's camera site show the "Park" area? Or is he using this camera to see what the wave action/weather is? This will be my first season in these 2 areas and just wondered where I could find the group when things get going.

The solglimt b & b cam is the only one i seen that actually shows the beach. That cam is just east of the lift bridge area its about in the spot they call the tot lot. If you look on google maps at the road running from the lift bridge there is a curve in the road just a little way from the bridge. Right there is a parking lot you can park in and thats the spot they are talking about when you here them say the tot lot. I didnt see any other cams other than the lift bridge itself

So whats everyone guess for the smelt to start showing up? I know other areas still cover in ice but the beaches on the point have no ice. Im guessing close to the end of april.

My guess is Around the 15th of April people should start seeing a few. It's MN and Lake Superior, and the weather can be notoriously frustrating like last years NE winds that never gave up! A late winter storm could push things back. And big warm up might move things up, but I would think that it would only move things a couple days in either direction for some early successes this year. I would guess that the big push or peak will be late April...say around the 25th or so.
Usually Ashland goes 1st and Park Point will be a day or so later. But this year might be the 1st that I can remember it being reversed. Kind of weird seeing Ashland all locked up in thick ice, and the beaches of Park Point are bare with open water. I'm sure that Douggar agrees, since he already pointed that out earlier.
Nice to hear from all you. I can't wait to share some beers with guys on the beaches and in the rivers!
