Hello, I want to try the Wisconsin point this year but have never tried this side before. Do I have to buy a Wisconsin license? If yes, where is a near by place i can go buy a license and how much should I be expecting to pay? Also, I've heard of people using Umbrella drop nets. Has anyone used this method with good success? Thanks in advance for the info. Walleye Slayer our crew also uses drop nets on Wisconsin Point they work awesome and you don't get wet ! Welcome to the board and maybe see ya on the Point and with drop nets you can catch smelt during the day just a fyi ! Good luck out there

"Smelt are "running" in Chequamagen right now".....
I figured it would be early.mushrooms are poping about month early, and some trees are showing signs of early budding..hoping it will be strong shore spawn, unlike last years were some had theorizes strong winds pushed warm water off shore, and caused off shore spawn for part of season..

They're running already in Wisconsin? Probably a few confused smelts but I think it's still early. I'll go once it's hot in Duluth. Please keep us updated on that run. Thanks

As for poles, my set up uses PVC pipes with the ends capped, with a small hole drilled to allow for drainage. The rounded caps make for a nice smooth side for gliding across the bottom. They are very light, don't retain water, and are very durable, and have never been replaced. One trick I learned years ago, was to add back ropes to your poles. It's really easy, just add a loop of rope about 6' long from the bottom of your pole to the top of your pole at about where the top of where the top line of your net is tied on. This line goes over your back, with it between your legs when pulling your net through the water. This way when you walk backwards your legs and back do the work. You won't have to bend over and pull with your hands and arms all night long! As for attached the net lines, just drill a hole big enough to thread it through and tie it off. Or just you could just tie them on the pipe, but then they slide down without a stopper. Last year I had a guy come up and ask me "what king of gorilla are you"? I ask him what do you mean? He saw me pulling my net with ease with using just one hand on the top, that's all that's needed to keep the pole in contact with the bottom! He couldn't believe his eyes and wanted to now what I was doing or if I really had some kind of super human strength! I showed him the back ropes I had on my setup and was so happy that the trick was so easy! In hindsight, I should've played super hero! BTW, with the other hand free it's easier to drink a beer while pulling your net
Thanks Dave! I will have to try this setup. Sounds like it will be a big help! GL this year.

A lot of folks find this forum and make it a favorite. Which is awesome of course. But what you really should do is make this link your favorite, alakesuperiorfishingcharter.com/smelt.htm , which has excellent info on it that helps a guy out. Including links to webcams. It also has a straight shot to this forum. Hope that helps! The beach cam is now showing big piles of ice on shore. But the lake looks very nice otherwise!

Hi Dominodave, I'm having trouble viewing the Webcam using this website? I click on the link and then select Ashland Webcam. Below is the error i get. Is this the correct way or is there another way of doing this? Server Error

Hi,
Does anyone know if A-frame dip nets are legal in Mn? I think it would be a good compromise between a single person dip net and a 2 person smelting seine.
Thanks for your time

Grace I have not found any Minnesota regulations against A-frame nets. They are most like dip nets and dip nets do not have any size regulations. Now before anyone gets to carried away with that... the regulations do call for a max 4ft high seine. last year I made an A-frame that was 4 feet tall so that I could justify it with the MN dnr. Also I kept it out and away from the rivers so that no one could claim I was using a seine in the river... which is illegal in MN.
(they work best where there is a sandy bottom so staying out and away from the rivers works better anyway)
I didn't have much success with that net last year... but then again it needed some upgrades to make it work better. I want to try it again this year. Something to try..? This year I want to run the A-frame a few feet off to the side of guys pulling a 25 ft scene. Often the smelt will try to make a break for it around the end of the scene so that might be a great place to try... That's my thoughts but there could be others who have more info or experience with this.

Hello NetMaster & dominodaves! Just wanted to say that I'm sorry I didn't catch up with you guys last season. Just as the season got hot; I lost 2 very good friends and at my age its something that is starting to happen more often. I was 65 last week and I dread to read the obits in the local paper. More often than not I will see someone my folks knew well, and I feel that I should represent my family at a funeral. Little did I know that my friends would pass.
Great to see this site up and running well for 2017. Hope I can catch up with this group when the smelting really takes off. I am retired and would love to join any one of you guys and Gals who would entertain some help. I had several great offers last season and am sorry I couldn't make them. I live in the cities and would be glad to share any costs involved in a trip. I'l be reading this site nightly! Good Smelting to all!

A-frame dip nets
JG - Thanks for looking up that reg. I looked at that page too and also picked up this verbiage, "....as measured across the hoop of the dip net.." My take (defense) will be that my A-frame doesn't have a 'hoop' and is actually a single person 4'x20' seine. Ha! Hopefully it won't be an issue...
NetMaster - That's great! What did you make your A-frame with? I'm looking at some mahogany 1x2s and 4'x20' netting to stay within the spirit and mostly the letter of the law.
