Glad you got the net dominodaves. Yes it was a thin handle that bent first time out. But the long handle worked well in the deep areas to get down deep. Just remember if you get any send some my way. My son and wife in Tennessee are hoping for a fish fry sometime this year. Oh and the one you dropped it off for at Red Lobster. Yep that is the one we went out with before. Hey let me know when your fire dept has its fish fry. Might be later because of fishing opener. But might be fun to bring some friends up there.

Hopefully we will a descent season, and we can hook you up with all you need for a couple fish fries! But at this point, many of us are just flat out worried but still hopeful. As with all fishing...there are never any guarantees.
I believe that the guy we know goes by Woodtick. it would be good to hear from him on here or by phone. I've gone through a couple of phones over the last few years and don't have all the numbers I used to. So pass along a shout out for me please, and as usual he is always welcome...or was it I was always welcome...can't remember, but I did appreciate the bar tending!!! ;D

Last year the speculation is that they missed the run because it came in so early. But who knows. The year before is was hot and heavy for like 3 days and it was pretty much over. Looks like their bay is still iced over on the online cam. Are you planning on Ashland again or Duluth this year?

I was thinking of Ashland again since it is a bit shorter drive for me, but would head up to Duluth if I need to. I hate to have to buy a MN fishing license since I have WI already.
JUst looked at maps of the Lester river area. Do people seine net along the beach in what looks to be a park to the north of the mouth of the river ?
in 2010 I hit it great in Ashland. Wonder if a person could go along any beach on the lake and get them ?

We get that question a lot. 1st off, you need to be like 500 feet or so from the mouth of the river to be able to seine there. (unless you are native American I'm told) 2nd its really not a sandy beach, it's all rocky and very tough to seine. So people give up on that pretty fast. Park point is like 7 miles long, the worlds longest freshwater sand bar, there is plenty of room and smelt to go around out there.

Cool. Thanks for the info. Do people seine on the wisconsin portion of the sand bar down by allouez bay ? ( I'm assuming you would go on the lake side ( east side ) of the sand bar ? )
I immagine depending on the wind, that could be tough with waves.

Yes, people do smelt there as well. I believe it's called WI Point. And with anywhere on the big lake, wind is always an issue. But when they are running, people will be surfing if they have to!
So if you go there and provide reports, please use WI point as your location so we all know what's up. Of course, you are welcome on our side as well.

so i was told from a dnr officer that if the weather doesn't warm up here, most of the fishes would drop their sacks and forget the spawning. would that be the same for smelt too or would they hold it out?

I've heard this concept before. I truly believe it to be total bunk. I'd like to see the evidence of a fish just dumping their eggs in open water. It would never happen for 2 basic reasons. Both are biological.
The 1st being absolutely zero chance of survival of the eggs with no chance of adaptation. The survival rate of fertilized eggs is very low even in ideal years. In nature were talking about a low percentage. Maybe 20% for example with maybe only 8% of those reaching adulthood. And only a fraction of those able to survive and spawn themselves. So a bad condition year like this, assuming it will continue to be bad with survival rates much lower, will create a poor year class of fish, not a complete no hatch with a zero survival rate.
The 2nd is the survival of the spawning fish themselves. These eggs and the sacs they are in are more likely to be reabsorbed back in their bodies than be dumped. This is energy their bodies can use, why just discard it. I've filleted fish after spawning that still have a few eggs in them that are slowly being reabsorbed, they can't always get every last one out. So their bodies will use them in due time.
So no matter how bad the conditions are, the fish will spawn somewhere, even if the conditions are not ideal. The continued survival of their species, and adaptations and evolution depends on it. Now my numbers might not be completely precise. College was a long time ago. But the biology behind it is solid.
So be patient, and they will come in!

Additionally, in the next couple weeks you will see the DNR close certain areas to fishing because of "late" spawning fish that are deemed vulnerable. A perfect example of this process playing out. These closures could affect much of northern MN. So don't be surprised, and don't let old wives tales scare you too much.
The fish's calendar doesn't always match ours.
