I have been following this thread for three years now and decided to get on board this year. Due to all of the excitement on this forum and the other one I follow, four or five of us are gonna take a crack at it at the Tot Lot tonight.
Will provide a recap tomorrow so you out-of-towners can make some plans for the weekend! Now rest up and try not to think about deep-fried smelt, a cold beer and...uh...more deep-fried smelt!

We'll be slightly to the left of the Tot Lot. Two veterans, one sophomore and one rookie. We'd be happy to make room for you Domino!

Rubberducky When you drive out on park point there is an S curve in the road. The tot lot is on the right the parking lot is on the left.

Just like any other kind of fishing , the wall is crowded but a concentrated area. Smelt can come in on the beach anywhere. If your by yourself it can be boom or bust.

Got about 3-4 dozen at my secret spot I like to call 'the Lester' tonight. Nobody else was there when I got there and I got almost all of them on the 1st trip out. After that they were few and far between. Another group showed up after me and when I left I think they had about 1/2 dozen. Got enough for a decent smelt fry. Hopefully I'll have better luck tomorrow night.

I started at the Point tonight, the waves were pouring in pretty good, lots of people, met some on-line posters, and some surfing lurkers that just like to read and keep up to date. Nice people. The point was really hit or miss for most. Some had the right net but were in spots where there was so much debris that they couldn't get their nets drug out of the water. Others had the wrong nets and couldn't catch a thing. But the guys that were willing to go out far and basically get a little wet, and were in the correct line with little debris, did real well and were filling pails pretty decently. Some pulls had as many as 50 others only a dozen or so. But they were doing pretty good. Others were just plain frustrated. If you didn't have a Christensen net, I felt for you!
After a bit I headed over to the Lester since I didn't want to get that wet, and wanted to check things out. When I got there things seemed pretty grim. Only a couple guys in the water not doing all that well. People leaving thinking it was a waste of time. Since I made the drive, I climbed in the water. At 1st, things were pretty slow, one per 5-10 dips, then a few schools moved in. We would get like 6 or 7 in 3 dips and then none for a bit. Then another school, 12 or so in 3 dips, then a dip with 6. One guy got a 15+ in a dip, things were looking up, then it went dead again, back to the 1 per 10-20 dips. I left at midnight with almost a gallon dipping by myself for 2.5 hours. A couple of other guys did about the same. Most everybody else did much less. You had to be in the water when these small schools came in, 3 or 4 dips and they were done.
The Lester has a very different feel to it this year. The flow is very slow, and very low. There is very little deep water there right now. I'm not sure how this will effect the run this year. Almost everyone has to dip in 1-2 feet of water, the channel is very short and not that deep, enough room for about only 4-5 guys, and everything else is shallow unless you head way out.
The river didn't smell fishy yet, so I think the run is just starting on the Lester and should only get better over time. The smelt I caught didn't seem ripe at all since there was no eggs squirting from them as I pulled them from my net. Even though some fat ones were obviously females still no egg release at all. Even my cooler is clean. So I'm convinced that this is only the beginning with the peak coming within a week as long as the weather holds. So I think it's safe to make your plans accordingly.
Coincidentally, I chose the 18th for the on-line poll for the "peak" or gettin them good. I think it will be close to that.

Thank you so very much for the updates dominodaves! I was thinking about heading out to Lester tonight but since it is still very slow I will wait for another few days. Please continue to update for those of us that live hours away..--steven
