Okay guys, hold your enthusiasm just a bit! Now just because the ice looks like it's gone on the beach doesn't mean it's really gone yet! LOL!!! Just a few short miles away, that ice is still there, and a NE wind will bring it all right back in! And also, the bay behind the Point is still pretty ice covered. So, we need the bay and river to open up and start to warm some, then that warmer water will flow into the lake and call in them smelt. Yeah, the beach waters will warm some if sunny, but not enough to spark any significant run on it's own.
It won't be long. So be patient and ready!
I thought about putting up a nice post yesterday of a big catch with pics of coolers full and smiling faces....but that would've been too cruel even for April fools! hehehehe

Wi point is basically the same sand bar. They should be running there when they run in Duluth. But the difference is in conditions and the ability to seine for them. 1st, the wind direction can be marginal and we can still get out there in Duluth. But not wi point....too rough! 2nd, st Louis river flows better out the canal in Duluth because it has better access. So the smelt naturally aggregate to the flow better there. 3rd, with some winds wi point is the place to be! If it's more easterly, than everything reverses and you are good to go! The big waves will pound in on Duluth and reverse the canal flow and it will pound, or push out through the wi point gap and its game on over there! So pay attention to the conditions and make your best guess. But they usually get them there too no matter what! Especially if the lake has layed down! But when Duluth is cranking! It's hard to beat! So maybe you should expand your horizons some and buy that MN fishing license and join us!!!

The cost of a license is way cheaper than a tank of gas! And then there is the time and effort part of the equation too!

Mw and buddy drive a long way for no run. I won’t go there again, not enough report and condition change fast on the beach. Not worth driving 3+ hours up there to find out they don’t run or no run that night unless u love very close by. Ashland and Duluth is my choice, more report and success report.

Tracy, yes I do. Way too funny! That's a bunch of smelt mounts!
Gotta agree with you Nate. My guess is that we are looking at maybe 10 days or so for some 1st successes, depending on weather! But you never know. A call to the Ashland Visitors Center might be prudent before you leave..... or is the Chamber?
