It's looking good out there on PP. I see waves so it's only a matter of time.

I see a lot of different repairs on things out on the beaches and rivers while smelting. Some I say WTF were they thinking! Others, can be very ingenious! The most common type of quick repair I see is people using zip ties. They are pretty good temporary fixes for both seine and dip nets...the rocks in the rivers make them pretty short term on dip nets. So use some piano wire or something similar and weave them together for a longer term fix.
If your seine needs some more extensive repair, get it to Duluth Nets. They used to be called Christianson Nets. Located in Duluth, if they can't fix it...they sell the right ones to replace it.

And yes, Ashland seems to get their run before Park Point. Last year it was maybe only a day or 2 different, but usually more like 5-7 days. Some might argue with that, but getting 3 or 4 fish in an evening really does count as running in my book.
This weather is finally turning and my smelt fever is ramping up!!!

Looking at the hot pond cam, ice is already breaking apart. With this good weather, once it clear up I know ppl are out there already. I might go there first. I remember last year once it clear up, a week later ppl were catching them. As for the net, I will see if I can get it to work. They are knotless.

I’m stalking this forum again. Each year for the past three years I’ve thought about coming up from the metro area, I just haven’t done it. Mainly because I have no equipment and don’t know what I’m doing.

Mainly because I have no equipment and don’t know what I’m doing. Not hard to do, last year was my first time going up north a couple time. Did very good for our 2 run. A cooler each time. U need a few gears. Seine net if u got enough ppl to do the beach. Dip net in the river if a alone. Tired and fun; only ckmes once a year so that’s y I go.

Yeah, it's really pretty easy to get started. 1st off, smelters are a super bunch of peeps. We usually are very happy to help put newbies. If you have waders, and can pull a Seine or help at a river. You are welcome to come up and help! You really don't even a net.
You can just come up and join in as a helper and someone will send you home with some for just doing so! Being beer of course! Keep a fire burning. Be conversational.
When they are running hard, there is way more than enough to go around! And the atmosphere is amazing!
So you are invited! To our group or just about any group, so come on up and see for yourself!

Homie if you wanna know the conditions up on the point just Google park point beach the first thing that comes up will be a link to the beach cams and weather conditions watch the water temps smelt spawn at about 40 degrees so you wanna be up there when it's about 38 to 40 they are usually there a little before it gets to 40
