Ahhhhhhh, I'm about 100% certain that you DO NOT need a trout stamp for smelting! You do need a fishing license for sure. But unless they have changed the laws? ?

Hardhitter, I just read the entire dnr regulations. And yes, it does say that you need a trout stamp to fish in Lake Superior. And yes, I do know that we MN residents and non residents need a valid fishing license to go smelting. But, this is the 1st I've actually heard or read this regulation. I've been checked dozens of times over the years and they've never mentioned it.
Can you call the dnr officer in your phone and ask him if smelting requires a trout stamp? I usually buy one...but we give out a ton of advice on here, and I want it to be as accurate as possible!
We want to limit the gray area stuff as much as possible!

About the license issue. I read the regulations and for smelting it says we need a fishing license. Fishing in Lake Superior we need a trout stamp. Is netting smelt the same as fishing in Lake superior for trout? I think fishing and netting are two different things.

That would be counter productive for the DNR... Smelt have nothing to do with the trout management plans, and trout must be returned anyway if caught in a seine or dip net.
