I know a couple years ago people were putting false information o here so be wary. Someone showed pictures of 5 gallons buckets full from the break wall.... I headed up there the next day and there was nothing. A few guys there said they were at the breakwall and no one got any. Just saying remain a little suspicious. Can't wait to bring home some fresh smelt though! Catfishing with mine from last year as we speak!

And I believe that they don't spawn under ice. Only in open water.

Okay, here's how it see it going down. Back in 2013 when we had the same weather pattern going as this spring, everyone was in a panic. But we learned some things that year! The 1st being, don't worry, we won't miss the run! That year, we had huge ice piles that would not melt, finally, a big storm came in and broke them up and washed them away. Suddenly, we had water to work, and yep, they were immediately in there and we started catching them that same evening! As to the reports of someone getting some already, I'm a bit skeptical of that myself. Maybe someone is just trolling us...!! However, if there is any open parts of the beach along Park Point that are ice free right now, and someone could pull a seine....then maybe?! But otherwise, I'm waiting for those piles of ice to disappear one way or another, and then I will be in the water asap! The rivers I'm sure are still way too cold. And also, The conditions in Ashland have historically always improved faster than Duluth, and as someone with a lot knowledge on this once told me, Duluth has never started before Ashland, not once! So I'm still keyed in to their reports 1st.
Also, the smelt run very strong and hard in late spring runs. Their eggs are ready, cool water will delay the spawning instinct, but warm enough water will trigger a mass migration into the shallows all at the same time. So when it starts, it will be fun!

The full moon is this weekend but my guess is that next week will be a better week with the warm rain and raising temp. Water should be atleast up in the 40s that my theory.

Looks like as soon as ice is gone they will rush the the shores and river. Be ready to go at any moment.

Still keyed in on next weekend being epic, I imagine they're already staging with the lake temp rising as fast as it is. Planning on hitting park point the following Fri/Sat

Still keyed in on next weekend being epic, I imagine they're already staging with the lake temp rising as fast as it is. Planning on hitting park point the following Fri/Sat Stub, How far are you traveling? My guess is you’ll be wasting your time and gas. I want to be Smelting as bad as the next guy. Luckily for me my travel time is only 15 minuets. Take care, Tom (BD110)
