Last year...we were already eating fresh smelt on this date! I was looking through old pics the other day and noticed one of my first smelt of 4/15/17! I was out Saturday checking out the waves up the shore. That lake was fierce! Decided to see if we could get down into canal park on the way back. Near the lighthouse was blocked off so we went over to Park Point. Went to the tot lot and could only see an ice mountain built up about 30-40 yds out. Lot of melting needed before any nets can be pulled.

Anymore predictions on what a good date this years run will start? I've got some buddies coming up the first weekend of May... still looking promising?

I'm thinking it'll be late this year as temperature isn't warming up.

Saturday the 5th is only 17 days away....One would think that the sun could do some serious damage to the ice and snow, and warm some shallow water somewhere. But even if it warmed to 75 for a week straight...I'm not sure that would be enough to get things going. I could be wrong, but my gut says that we are waiting even later than that 1st weekend in May for any decent action. I know the weather is forecast to turn warmer this weekend. Some warm rains would help, but I fear the latest cold and snow has things pushed back yet again.
To give some perspective. Lake Minnetonka's all time latest ice out date is May 5th...That's 17 days from today, and my money would be on the over this year! And obviously, that's a long way from the North Shore.

I was out at the Lester yesterday and there is a 3foot wall of rock. And the beach have a wall of ice 200 ft out. It's going to take a lot of rain and warm temps. It's crazy up here.

Smelt spawn when water hits 40 degrees. Is that the temp in Superior or the tributaries?

As the predictions begin here I have one more to ask everybody. So if this smelt spawn season is late will this have some relevance or predictability as to the shortness or length of days we can expect to have for as our window of opportunity. Hoping we can all get in two week-ends , two decent week-ends that is,...but it's hard to predict Ol' Mother Nature. Best of Luck to Everyone and a Safe one too !

Over here in Ashland the whole bay is locked in with 30in of ice, most of us locals predict no run at all here or a very small one, if them smelt have to wait to long they simply reabsorb their eggs and move back out but ya never know. but I wouldn't get your hopes up over this way, even the shoreline is still solid, truck out there yesterday.

Propwash, I've heard those comments before from people. No run, egg dumping, etc. Especially back in 2013...everyone was worried. Including me! But we had maybe one of the best years of smelting in 40 years that year. Douggar killed them in Ashland, and they didn't start moving in there until April 30th or so. And Duluth was amazing as well.
Here's my opinion. When we have a late or very late spring, the weather warms quickly, the sun is very high and warms the water very well. So the water temps are pretty much a oneway ticket in going up, and staying up, and making the spawning action crank up and keep going. An early spring can have fluctuating temps that go back and forth causing a start and stop and start again spawn, and really frustrate all of us.
In 2013, May 1st was pretty the 1st day of the run in Duluth. And they ran hard for more than 3 weeks before petering out. My guess is that we will see something similar this year. Just maybe a few days later.....but it will be a great season because of the late spring!

Trying to upgrade the net for this year's run. Any ideas on the best sinkers to put on? And how?

To answer this, we need to know what kind of net and setup you are using?
