I cannot wait for the smelt run is at its peak off the shores of Superior. Bought a brand new net last month from Duluth Nets. So my 24 y.o. Son and I ,53 y.o. Old guy will give it a go.

Just wondering if anyone knows the rules on donating smelt from out of state I'm trying to start a smelt fry to help with funds for a new building for the archery league I'm in and was thinking about going over to Ashland or Wisconsin point to get them but not sure if it's legal to donate them for something like that if the fish are from out of state

Hi all, Brand new to the forum. I am hoping to get up north this year for some smelting. I grew up, up there and have awesome memories of this. It sure is not like it used to be. I still manage to get a couple dinners of smelt each year as I still have family up there. Hoping this forum will assist me in targeting some good dates for when they start to run. Thought I would say hi to all and maybe leave you with this picture of the "good ol' days"

With all this snow coming down, when do most people think the smelt will be running? I'm getting sick of this snow now and waiting for them warm weather to come.

sglusk, I remember those days. Sleeping in the back of a blue station wagon on the shores of the knife river, waiting for darkness to arrive and bring the mother load in. My money says that pic is the knife river of the old days, taken from Highway 61

Just got back from Florida. Went food shopping at a local supermarket and at the seafood counter they had fresh smelt.(yes in Florida)The butcher behind the counter had no idea what they were or how to cook them. Being a smelter for over 40 years I shared photos, stories and recipes with him. Just the icing on the cake for already a great trip. I still can't believe $8.99 a pound and never frozen. I think it's a sign for a great smelting season this year! Can't wait!!!!

I am not sure how to do this post thing but I am going to try. I have wanted to go smelting for some years and as I was doing search today I came upon this forum. I know nothing about where and when . I would appreciate any information. Thank you. I live 3 hours from Duluth.

Don't load your stuff and head up there yet the ice is still locked up in the bay out there. If you wanna see the conditions out there whiskey just Google lake superior cams there should be a link to cameras all over lake superior in there.

Well Folks, Looks like my calendar is allowing me to make the trip to the Big Gitcheegumee on the Apr.28th and the May 5th week-ends. Hoping this range of time will be OK for the Smelting. .....What do you think?
