Good to see everyone starting to get back to the forum this year. Doing very well Vee, thanks! How's the family doing? Are they looking forward to some fresh tasty smelt like I am? ? And yes, you were pretty absent last year! Hope you have some more spare time to spend with us on the beaches!! Yes, at this point I would expect an earlier run. Not because the abnormally warm weather, and yes that can change in a hurry! But the main reason is that there seems to be a lack of ice this year on the big lake. Winds can always blow some in from further NE if there is a bunch out there. And I'm sure there is. But things are coming together for an early run it seems. Lets hope mother nature is more kind this year with less NE winds! I would appreciate some dry waders this year! LMAO...like that would actually happen!!!!

As a kid growing up in Superior I used to go to the shores of lake superior gathering the smelt as older guys brought in the nets, used the Dip nets on the culverts and some streams throughout the tributaryies leading out of the St,Louis river bay area. Great memories!! Now I want to bring my own son up there and do some smelting show everybody Good times we all used to have back in the mid to late 70's !!

Hey Dave - Family is doing well and of course they are looking forward to some tasty smelt. Last year didn't work out so well but i'm hoping for a better year this year and to be able to put some in the freezer. Hope all is well with you and your family. If this warm weather keeps up what time frame are you thinking? See you soon!

I have this seine I bought from Cabela's , a minnow seine, but without poles- handles on each end. Somebody here know what a guy can use as the net's end handles?....Thinking I have to use something homemade, carve a couple handles from 2 x 4 's , or something?
