Yeah, not quite as much but still well above normal in terms of ice. The lake never got a chance to warm up with the mild and short summer. The fast ice in Duluth broke up yesterday. Probably still 50 ft of ice off park point. I'll have to swing down and take a closer look.

So you're saying they started running or are you just trying to get people hyped about the run smelting 101?

Where did you find water to net in? The hot pond? Changing fast but still a lot of ice out there - (click to enlarge)

I'm pretty sure that someone was just stirring the pot a little. The Ashland cam appears to show the bay still completely frozen over. And the satellite photos confirm it. So I don't think anyone is getting smelt just yet in Lake Superior. Now Lake Erie or Lake Michigan maybe. Our turn is coming!

Hi everyone! Gearing up for another great run this season! Hopefully we will be out there sooner than later. Please be respectful and courteous of others when running your nets and/or not take over their lanes.

Lookin forward to a trip up north but due to time constraints the only weekend in April available is the weekend of the fourth what is the likely hood that the smelting will be afoot by that time

yammaddogg, I'm really thinking that you will be out of luck that early. Things are progressing nicely weather wise, but I don't think the waters will be warm enough that early. That same date in May might work better. However, you never know. So keep checking here and if you decide to give it a go, let us know how you did! That's what makes this site so helpful. Post the good and bad, so people can decide for themselves when to go. Good Luck and thanks for joining and posting!
Unless you were referring to the 4th weekend...because that would be much better!

I haven't logged on here since last year I couldn't recall my password. Lol. I hope everyone is doing well! Winter this year has been short imo, but I don't mind. According to the 10 day forecast, Duluth should be getting temps in the 50's then dropping back down to the low 40's again. My bet is that the smelt will run at the end of April if I had to take a guess. The itch for smelting hasn't really struck me yet and that probably has to do with my excitement for open water fishing. Haha.

Getting very close! Just thought i'd ask, what kind of poles are best for the seine net? Are the aluminum seine poles good? Or wooden poles better?
