We got nada in Ashland tonight. A few each pull but only four that had any size to them. Weather was great and sunset was beautiful so it was still worth the drive.

Thinking about heading back up to Ashland, Wednesday or Thursday. Have to wait an see what going on. Been a weird year so far. Anyway can't find anyone down here who wants to go, so I am looking for a hook up. I have all the gear just looking for another puller with waders. Depending on what a friend in Ashland says will depend on when I head up. Anyone interested.

We were at the Tot Lot and pulled from 9:00 - 10:45. Ended up with around 4 gallons. Plenty for us.
Sure was a great night to be out as well. Had a proud moment as I watched my 8-year-old boy and two of his friends each bite a head off one. The tradition continues!

Was out on the point Wednesday night and pulled five gallons. A good mix of males and ripe females. Went down again last night at around ten pm with the fire log and fryer for a little party on the beach. Fried up Wednesday's catch and did a few more pulls with the boys. We all did well but will make the note that it was all males in the bucket. Never squeezed a single ripe female last night. See ya all next year!!!!

Question.........which come in 1st. Males or Females. Our catch at Ashland on last Thursday was about 70% squirting males. Very few ripe females.

Males usually come in first but if they don't find females they will probably stick around, would't you?
Lots of rain today the Lester will be running high and warm. My guess would be a run..

Saturday evening was an interesting evening! I thought everywhere was going to be good. The weather conditions were perfect. The Lester was a total bust, which surprised me. The Point started good, got slow, then busted loose after 11:30pm, which is also a surprise, and Ashland was a no show which really doesn't make sense either. Since there seems to be a large number of males to females right now...my guess would be that the females are over due and the we may see a nice run soon if the this weather change doesn't mess things up too much! It may or may not take a few days for things to recover, so keep us posted on what's happening out there! But the Point had a real nice run Saturday night depending on where you were, and what time you were there! We caught about 3.5 gallons last night and left at 11pm from the point. Apparently too soon! I took my 1st time smelting wife up to the Lester to show her what I do up there as well. Nothing was happening there at all. She looked at me and said "really, this is where you go? Everyone looks like zombies out there and they aren't getting any!" I said that's just the way it is sometimes. Just then a guy chimed in that he got 1 a 1/2 hour ago with a smile. The look on her face was pretty entertaining! My son and his friend (1st timer) were helping out early, they bit the head off for tradition! Bgood came over from the Lester to help out later as well, cell phones are awesome. Attachments:

Saturday night went 1st to lester for just 1/2 hour, water so low we decided to head to Point by airport. 1st time seining ever using homemade net with pocket. Left there at 12:30 pm with 10 gallons. Seems like everyone was doing well.
Lots of fun. Think I am done for year.

Just fried up the last of the 4 gallons we caught Friday night. After a late arrival in Duluth our first pull was about 40 and caught less from there. Stayed until 12:30 out at the airport. They waves finaly took their toll. Plenty of smelt to eat for the whole weekend. Had family friend and neighbors over and talked of the old days of smelting! The newbies were game for the tradition of biting the heads off. Fun was had by all. Chances are good to try again next weekend.......if they are still running. THANKS!!!!! for your posts. They were all very helpful in a succefull trip!!

Went, I and I'm sure a few others would like to know how you made your net with a pocket? Maybe you could provide a photo as well?

Lester has a lot of leaves and debris tonight. Lots of current too. If we don't have anything happening by 11:30 we will call it a night
