A quick update on conditions in the Duluth area.
The beach is not entirely free of ice. The Breakwall by the lift bridge is clear. I would assume that the Tot Lot would be as well. However, the Airport area still has some sizeable "ice bergs" on shore. The winds and wave have been beating them up good. So I'm guessing they will be gone in a few days.
I do not have any info on Ashland or WI Point. I would assume WI Point would be the same as the Airport.
The Lester is still running very cold...33.5 degrees, and very high and muddy. The NWS has flood warnings for the area rivers right now. So I think it will be a while before they can produce.
I would believe that there should be some activity on the open beaches any night now going forward. Nothing huge yet, but I think you could catch a few now.
But I agree with Oldstar...10-14 days before anything big happens...only if the weather the warms!!!!

The Lester was up to 36 degrees last night. And there was no smelt caught there last night.
These strong NE winds have the beaches insanely unseinable!
I have a strong will to be out there...however, as bgood says...be smart and stay alive! The surf is too dangerous and the rivers are high and fast...and it seems the smelt agree as well!!!
The weather is forecast to warm next weekend! My money says Mothers will be happy!!!

I agree Sandburr! The weather looks like it's turning decent! 5 days of sun will make a huge difference! I'm hopeful that things will start to kick off a bit this week! And by this weekend hopefully they will be going good!

Well, we're into May now and I think I've only ever been up once this late in the season. I'm still hoping I'll have a chance to get onto the shore and I'm trying to stay optimistic. Slightly warmer weather this week seems promising.

Ok, I know this may be a reach, as I know most people dont like to give up their honey holes.....but, I'm still gonna ask. Where would be a good place to try with the family? I purchased a pocket net, and would like to find some of these delicious treats. We aren't die hards, would only like to bring home an ice cream pail or so ( enough for a few good smelt feeds). Hell, Id give any excess to anyone fishing next to us. Just fun getting the wife and teenage daughters out ( and off their instasnapchatgram pages), and enjoying the comradery!
Yes, buying a small bag of smelt may be easier, but its about getting the family out!
Please, no snide comments needed, just thought someone would be helpful and point us in the right direction. Im located an hour south of both Ashland and Superior. Thanks in advance, and stay safe!

Well folks...I woke up to a bunch of messages this morning! All of them about how the smelt started to run last night!
1st off, I had good friends let me know that the Lester saw its 1st action last night! 2-4 per scoop...they left with about 5 gallons! This is great, because when we know for sure when they started...so we should be able to guess how long they will go before petering out! So 10-14 days from now things should dwindle if we don't have any weather related pauses...
Park Point has some action as well. Now I'm not sure where, but reports seemed to come in from the break wall all the way to WI point. I wish we had some people that could verify these reports with reports of their own. I have no idea on how the ice looks in the Airport area, or WI point. But it makes sense, the beaches usually start before the rivers, so if the Lester has started...I'm sure the beaches have too!
It's a great day! Happy smelting...and keep us all posted!!!

I have a good buddy that I see every year smelting! A real nice French Canadian with the deepest voice you'll ever meet...with a feisty little Philipian wife! He's been dipping the Lester since 1966...And she has been helping him for almost as long.
He said this to me today! He believes that this year could be the year of years that we will talk about for a while to come! A late run is usually a great run. And the weather looks to be steady and slowly improving over the next 10 days...with nice lite winds to bring them in! Sunny days to warm the waters. These are nearly perfect conditions! This is the recipe for an awesome run!
FYI...I agree 100%
