Last year, on our last night of the season, about the 27th of April I think... we took 85 pounds of Smelt on a night nobody should have been Smelting...including us! We drove through total whiteout conditions from Moose Lake on up. The blowing snow, up to 45 mph, and single digit temps, made it a chilly one! I think wind chills were -28F that night. Even the Rum was not keeping us as warm as we would have liked! It was so cold that our nets and clothes were freezing over and had to be thawed out by dipping into the lake. The river water was running very fast too, as it was up by about 6 to 7 feet above previous years levels. We really had to work hard to stay on our feet from the current and were soaked since the Smelt were being found in about chest high water. Fortunately, my waders were frozen on me and were not letting water in, even though I was in water over the top of them many times. They were so frozen to me that when I called it a night, the fire could not even thaw me out it was so cold and the ice buildup so thick. The others broke as much ice off of me as they could and I had to thaw out in the truck before I could get out of my gear! We worked hard for our catch that night!! Probably why they tasted better than any other year?? This year, Im hoping they decide to run on a warm 45F degree night with no breeze!

Hearing a little action here and there. Nothing to say that the run has started yet

My buddy and I caught about a dozen tonight near the airport. Lots of people out but not too many nets in the water. I think the run is just beginning now.

Are the metal dip nets recommended or would the nylon material ones better? Thanks.

Are the metal dip nets recommended or would the nylon material ones better? Thanks. If you dip net at the river and creek, metal dip net is recommended due to very strong current. I like to pull seine net on the beach.
